Ever think you could cook an egg on the sidewalk? The solar oven project is a fun way harness that heat to cook outside on hot sunny days. There are several plans available, as illustrated in Types of Solar Ovens. The solar oven described in the Instructions for Constructing a Cooker is made of household insulation, cardboard, and aluminum foil. Follow the links in the Internet Resources for more construction plans for ovens and links to companies that have ovens for purchase.

The content for this series of pages is based on a report I wrote for a Technical Communication class at Austin Community College in the fall of 1998. The report describes solar box cookers and provides instructions for their construction and use as a project demonstrating alternative energy to physical science students. Read the updates for new information and results since the paper was written.
